How to Paint Over Mdf Thermofoil Cabinets
- 1). Disassemble the cabinets as much as possible with a screwdriver. Remove any knobs, doors and drawer fronts that you can. It will make sanding and painting much easier and efficient.
- 2). Wipe down the cabinets with a clean rag soaked in hot water and mild dish detergent to remove any dirt and grime that could damage the final finish of your paint job. Dry the cabinets with a separate clean rag.
- 3). Sand the cabinets with a 220-sanding block or sandpaper to remove any finishes and to create a more textured surface for the paint to adhere to.
- 4). Wipe the clean cabinets with a tack cloth to remove all the dust and dirt created by the sanding.
- 5). Apply a single coat of Aqualock primer to the cabinets with a stiff bristle brush. Let the pieces dry to touch (for about an hour). Apply a second coat the primer to the cabinets with a foam brush, in even strokes. Let this coat dry for one to two hours.
- 6). Apply one coat of acrylic latex paint (in your selected color/finish). This can be painted on with a foam brush or roller, or sprayed on with a spray can or electric paint sprayer. Allow the paint to dry to the touch (one to three hours). Apply a second coat, if necessary.
- 7). Apply a thin coat of a clear polyurethane varnish to the cabinets once they've dried fully. Use a clean rag to apply the varnish.
- 8). Put the doors and knobs back on your cabinets using a screwdriver once everything has dried fully.
