Successful Online Business Strategies - How Being An Entrepreneur Is Much Like Being An Athlete

Training
It is no secret that to be an elite athlete you need to train, and train hard. Training is also vitally important to the success of your business. Why do we invest in training? Simply put, to get better. Training gives you a firm foundation and if done effectively, keeps you up to date with the current trends (which shift and change all the time). I have a friend who is an elite conditioning coach and his motto is "we train this way because your opponent doesn't". His athletes get results for a reason: they train when the other guy doesn't. They have more knowledge, skill and experience. If you have been lax with your training, you need to reevaluate and commit to a higher level of learning.
Goals
What is a goal? It is your aim, your desired result, the object of your ambition and effort. Goals are the road map keeping you on course. It is easy to overlook your goals. Many people are great at setting goals but few actually achieve them. The most important part about setting a goal is to take ACTION on it. For most, this is the missing link. If you are just setting goals and figuring you will eventually get there, you are wrong. A goal will keep you heading in the right direction. When you set a goal and then take deliberate action on it, your subconscious will guide you in the direction of that goal. One of the reasons why so many people fail is that they set a goal but didn't actually go after it. I have seen athletes pick up a new sport and find themselves at a National training camp within the first year simply because they set a goal and went for it. What are you waiting for, set your goals and don't be afraid to think big!!!
Commitment
This word is often mistaken for loyalty. They are very different. Loyalty is a strong feeling about something, a conviction. Commitment is a state of being, an obligation, a sacrifice. I see loyalty as being strictly a feeling, you feel loyal to the cause therefore you participate; whereas commitment is more than just a feeling, it's a pledge. Commitment engages more than your emotions - it involves your integrity. Athletes who train seven days a week, 365 days a year, rain or shine, sleet or snow are committed to the outcome whatever the cost. The end result far outweighs the sacrifice. Are you committed to your success or are you just loyal to it?
Discipline
Successful people are often said to have "great discipline". What does it mean and why does it matter? Simply put, discipline is the act of training yourself mentally and in some cases physically, in a habit forming and controlled way. In this case, training yourself to do what needs to be done, not because it is fun or exciting, but because it is paramount to your success. The people who succeed in life are good at doing the things that most people don't enjoy doing. Whether it is training everyday or committing to place an ad every day for 90 days without fail; discipline is not always fun but when executed, can be the cornerstone of your business success.
Mindset
Mindset is a more important, if not the most important factor in determining your success or failure. Once mastered, the possibilities are endless; but if fought with, it can send you spiralling into the abyss. This topic is vast and complex: it covers topics from focus to self-limiting beliefs. Essentially it is the attitudes and beliefs that are established, either by you or for you. The good news is that they can be changed to serve you and enhance your success, rather than limit and defeat it. Entrepreneurs, just like athletes, should be spending time daily visualizing what it is they are working for. Whatever it is (a lifestyle, car, freedom) make it real, set your mind and go get it!
In conclusion, I challenge you to take inventory in each of these five areas and take action where you can. Only you can choose if you are going to just play the game, or play the game to win!
