- 1). Mow the grass using the mower's lowest setting to cut the lawn down as far as possible. Be careful not to lower your mower too far and hit the blade to the turf.
- 2). Spray water onto the entire lawn until it is just damp.
- 3). Immediately lay down sheets of newspaper onto the damp lawn to cover the entire surface. The newspaper should be 10 sheets thick for best results.
- 4). Shovel mulch onto the newspaper in a uniform, 3-inch layer. Allow approximately four weeks for the mulch and newspaper to completely smother the grass. Once the grass is completely smothered, you can mix the mulch into the soil. The newspaper will safely decompose.
