    • 1). Apply a 2-inch layer of compost around the tree, completely under the spread of its branches. Water the soil to slowly leach the compost into the soil. The compost will give the tree many of its required nutrients.

    • 2). Place a 3-inch layer of organic mulch in a 12-foot diameter around the tree. Keep the mulch 4 to 6 inches from the trunk to prevent moisture damage to the bark of the trunk. Shredded bark, grass clippings and pine needles are excellent sources of nitrogen.

    • 3). Apply a slow-release shrub and tree food each spring. There are spiked items you can place in the ground around the tree or granules you can sprinkle on the soil around the spread of the tree. Granules work better and can be placed on top of the mulch. The water will slowly take the fertilizer into the soil. Refer to manufacturer's directions on how much to apply per tree size and age.

    • 4). Do a soil test for the presence of manganese if the leaves are turning yellow and have dark green veins. This is the most common nutrient deficiency for maples. Soil tests can be bought at most garden centers or local extension centers.

    • 5). Implant a manganese capsule into the trunk of the tree if the soil test shows a manganese deficiency. This can be done by drilling a hole an inch into the lower trunk and inserting the capsule. Maple trees "bleed" badly, so a sealant or bandage may be required to hold the capsule in the tree.
