Can Men Contract a Yeast Infection?

101 1
Yes, men can contract a yeast infection although women contract yeast infections way more than men. The cause of male yeast infection is the same as for women; the Candida albicans fungus. And the remedies are much the same too. Discover the symptoms, causes and remedies for male yeast infection here.

Before we go into how men can contract a yeast infection, let's look at the causes...

The cause of the 'symptoms' is a fungus called 'Candida albicans' which is naturally present in most of us, and which particularly enjoys the dark, warm, moist areas of our bodies. It normally doesn't cause you any problems at all, simply because your body's friendly bacteria won't let it; they keep it under control.

Sometimes, though, their numbers are reduced to such a level that they cannot control the fungi any more, and the Candida 'overgrows' into an infection. The types of things that negatively affect the good bacteria are; lowered immune system, antibiotics, steroids, poor nutrition, etc. So these can be looked on as underlying causes.

And what are the symptoms?...

An infection can often begin in the gut and spread from there to other parts such as a woman's vagina, your penis, mouth, anus, even your skin and nails.

Men most often contract a yeast infection in their penis, i.e. a penile infection. Typical symptoms are; red / inflamed head, thickish discharge, severe itching, blister-like spots, painful urination, and dry / flaky skin.

How do men contract a yeast infection?...

Apart from the underlying conditions, some of which were mentioned above, many times this happens as a result of their having sexual intercourse with a sexual partner who has already contracted a yeast infection. Although sex, in itself, isn't a cause of an infection, it can 'transfer' an infection between partners.

And this is where male yeast infection is particularly troublesome, because oftentimes male symptoms don't show up for a considerable time. This means that the condition isn't being treated fast enough, and, any sexual partner can unknowingly contract an infection.

How is a male infection treated?...

Now typical mainstream treatment comes in the form of drug-based creams, gels, and sprays etc., that are applied directly to the affected area. You can them through your doctor's prescription or over-the-counter. And they can be effective enough over time for many.

The problem can be though that, because they attack the symptoms rather than the root causes, your infection can seem to take some time to clear up. And sometimes, they can clear up, only to reappear once you've stopped the medication. Another factor in this is that the candida fungus can build-up a resistance to the drugs.

So increasingly, men are turning to totally natural cures without the downsides of expensive drugs. And not only are they looking at natural home remedies to deal with the infection itself, they are also addressing the root causes.
