104 8

    Features

    • Shaken baby syndrome occurs when an infant suffers a variety of different types of injuries after a violent shaking.

    Symptoms

    • The common symptoms of eye problems from shaken baby syndrome are pooling of blood in the eyes, glassy-appearing eyes and fixed pupils.

    Retinal Hemorrhage

    • A common injury sustained by an infant who is violently shaken is retinal hemorrhage. Retinal hemorrhage occurs when a shaken baby experiences bleeding along the rear, inner layer of the eye. In some cases, bleeding stops on its own accord; however, medical attention is required.

    Retinal Detachment

    • Retinal detachment is another potential injury sustained by shaken baby. In the case of retinal detachment, the inner most layer of the baby's eyeball detaches from the eye. This type of injury requires prompt medical intervention.

    Warning

    • If a child appears to have one or another (or a combination) of the symptoms associated with eye problems from shaken baby syndrome, seek immediate medical attention.
