Lighting your way to a great look

Lighting and dollhouses is a little like magic at Christmas time, it adds a tremendous awe factor, but you have to be at the right point to get started. This is the point when you have moved from setting up a miniature house for your kids to expanding this hobby into something more. It is really a lot of fun to light your dollhouse and at the same time a challenge to learn new things. At the same time, isn't the challenge why we are in this hobby? When you break it down, lighting is simply connecting electricity through a wire and a plug. And to add upon that there are great step by step instructions that come with most kits to help you along the way. As will all aspects of this game, things will get easier with time. The best way to start is small, so get a small kit and begin. Remember whether you think you can or whether you think you can't you are right.

Dollhouse Interior Plan Preparation

If you fail to plan you plan to fail. A plan will help you avoid pitfalls like spending too much or buying the wrong items. A basic floor plan and a budget should be the minimum of your list; these at least will get you started. A floor plan can be as simple as a sketch that was drawn by hand or a print of a room that you would like to copy. There are many room designs both online and off. Make sure that you are taking notes of great rooms that you see. Take these notes and modify your plan. Now budget those items that you are interested in and try hard not to go over it. Remember, this is a hobby and constraining yourself to a budget allows control and happiness over your financial situation. If you find a piece of furniture that is over your budget apply your patience and save until you can purchase it.

Designing the Outside of Your Dollhouse Kit

The outside of the dollhouse has as much do to with the appeal, if not more, than the inside design. The Paint of the dollhouse along with the look of the shingles is the first thing that you notice with your exterior. When you are setting up your dollhouse apply a good three coats of good craft paint to your dollhouse. Make sure that you draw lines prior to applying shingles to preserve a straight look, most instruction booklets will provide the required measurements. Bird houses, dog houses, gazebos, and more are other ways to spruce up your exterior. You can even have some small flower pots to place in the window seals. Lighting is another addition that will really help the look of the outside features. Put some porch lights on, and if you have lit the inside it will make the glow through the windows appealing on the outside as well.

Using an Artists Color Wheel for your Benefit

Color will be the over ruling design medium for your dollhouse furniture and design choices. Everyone that has gone to high school art or taken any basic art school knows a little bit about the color wheel. This wheel was designed to fit all colors into a solid circle to express similarities and differences. Opposing colors are the most different and offer attractiveness to the eye called contrast, colors touching each other are the most similar and can be accent colors that heighten, but dont distract from the feel. When starting your designing pick up a color wheel for your color selections, a little knowledge about color coordination will go a long way to help your design and flow capabilities.
