Cognitive therapy is based on cognitive theory that emphasizes that an individual's emotions, psychological reactions and behaviors are a product of their thinking in the present moment. By controlling these emotions and giving them a positive face the negative behavior and dysfunctional thinking can be reduced thus leading to a reduction in suicidal thoughts too.

Using Cognitive Behavior Therapy as a method to treat depression, the therapist and client work together to first create a relationship of trust and then dig deep to discover the most pervasive issue. Once that has been identified, the therapist addresses it by using various methodologies and by developing a practical approach in which he or she helps the client to understand the relationship between beliefs, feelings and thoughts and how these have an affect on the behavior patterns.

The various techniques employed by a therapist under Cognitive Behavior Therapy include journaling, challenging pre-set beliefs, mindfulness and encouraging relaxation. The idea really is to teach the patient to replace negative, disruptive thoughts with positive, beneficial images in the mind that will diminish any bad feelings and facilitate recovery. It is common knowledge that suicidal tendencies are due to extreme negativity bordering on hopelessness and despair.

It is the job of the therapist to try and reduce these bad emotions via therapy and encourage positivity.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a specific kind of cognitive therapy that is used by psychologists to treat borderline personality disorders. These personality disorders too are extremely disruptive and people suffering go through extreme emotions and are always jumping from one crisis to another.

DBT as a cognitive approach can help individuals identify thought and assumptions that make their life harder and remove them bit by bit. In other words, it helps people to unwind and think in ways that makes them less harsh on themselves and life more bearable for them.

The baseline principal for all kinds of cognitive therapies is to work with the patient to help them get a better and deeper understanding of their mind, thoughts and emotions in order to identify where the problem lies and then find ways to eliminate it.

Another subtype of Cognitive Behavior Therapy is Schema Therapy where therapeutic interventions are used along with CBT to reduce depression issues.

For any individual suffering from suicidal thoughts, help should be sought as soon as possible. Suicidal behavior is complex and the problem is deep-rooted. This is exactly why a proper expert treatment is required and must be sought immediately.
