How to Remove a Border on Wallpaper
- 1). Locate a seam where the wallpaper border overlaps itself. Lift up on the corner of the border with a plastic putty knife and slowly pull it toward you. Newer wallpaper borders are typically "peel and stick" types, so they tend to lift off the wall easily. If this is the case with your border, continue slowly pulling it off the wall as you move around the room.
- 2). Scrape the surface of any stubborn wallpaper with the edge of a metal paint scraper. Spray the border with a wallpaper removal gel, then let the gel soak in for 30 to 45 minutes. The gel penetrates the paper backing of the border and breaks up the adhesive.
- 3). Remove the remainder of the wallpaper and backing with a plastic putty knife. Do not use a tool with a metal blade, which can damage the surface of the wallpaper beneath.
- 4). Mix a few drops of dishwashing detergent in 1/2 gallon of warm water. Dip a sponge into the solution and wring it out. Wipe down the wall with the sponge to remove any remaining adhesive.
