How to Propagate Purslane Flowers
- 1). Snip a young and healthy cutting off a mature purslane plant with sharp shears that have been sterilized with alcohol and rinsed clean with fresh water. Your cutting should measure at least 3 inches long.
- 2). Dip the bottom of the cutting in a hormone rooting powder mixed with water. Mixing instructions vary with each brand of root hormones, so follow mixing directions on the packaging. Hormone rooting powder can be purchased from any gardening store.
- 3). Pour soil in a pot at least 4 inches deep or deeper. Make sure the pot has holes in the bottom and a drainage plate to allow for drained water to collect.
- 4). Dig a small hole in the soil with your finger about 2 inches deep.
- 5). Place the bottom of your cutting in the hole in the soil and bury. Leave at least 1 inch of the cutting above the soil surface.
- 6). Water your cutting lightly to moisten the soil and place in a well-lit windowsill. Keep the soil moist to encourage the cutting to sprout roots. The cutting should have sprouted roots and begun to grow in its pot in about one month's time. At this point, it can be left in its pot or transplanted outside.
