How Is Luggage Measured?
- 1). Pack your luggage before measuring it. Bags tend to expand slightly after being packed, which is why you should not assume the sizes indicated on the luggage are correct. They reflect the unpacked bag, and may be measurements taken from the inside of the bag.
- 2). Measure the length, width and height of the bag. Be sure to measure to the widest point of each dimension. Combine the length, width and height to get the total size. Certain airlines have a total size limit, in addition to length, width and height limits. Continental is such an airline.
- 3). Place the packed bag on the scale. If the bag is too big to weigh alone, weigh yourself first, then weigh yourself holding the bag. Subtract the two numbers to get the weight of the bag. Certain airlines, such as US Airways, have weight restrictions for carry-on luggage, though most do not.
