How to Pay for CLEP Exams

    • 1). Contact your college's testing center to find out about its payment policy for CLEP tests. You may pay on exam day, or you may need to submit payment to the college before the exam. If you are taking the test at a testing center away from where you will attend college, contact the testing center where you will take the test for payment information. (College Board's website offers an online testing center locator.)

    • 2). Ask the testing center how much the administrative fees are and how you need to pay them. For example, Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix, Arizona, charges $15 per CLEP exam in administrative fees and $25 per CLEP exam for optional CLEP essay fees. The administrative fee is payable to the college. You must pay CLEP exam fees individually and make them payable to CLEP. Your college may accept credit card payments, or it may only accept cash, check or money order. Lone Star College in Tomball, Texas prefers credit card payments for CLEP exams, and it charges $10 for optional CLEP essay fees and $15 for administrative fees.

    • 3). Write a check or purchase a money order made out to the College-Level Examination Program to pay for your CLEP tests. It may be necessary to pay for each test separately, so you might need to write checks or get money orders for individual tests. Cash is not likely accepted as a form of payment for the exams. The case may differ for administrative fees.

    • 4). Take or send your payment for the CLEP test to your testing center. Some colleges may allow you to bring your test fees to the testing center on the day of the exam. Verify the particular policy for your testing center.
