How to Make a Crest in Illustrator
- 1). Launch Illustrator and create a new document by pressing “Ctrl" and "N” on the keyboard. Set the width at 600 pixels and the height at 800 pixels. Click “OK.” Click the “View” menu and select “Smart Guides.”
- 2). Select the “Ellipse Tool” from the Toolbox. Place the tool at the top of the page about a quarter distance from the left. Drag the tool down and towards the right of the page. Notice that the width and height display below the cursor as you drag it. Create a tall, thin oval about 360 pixels wide and 690 pixels high.
- 3). Press the “Down Arrow” on the keyboard until the oval is touching the bottom of the document. Use the left or right arrows to place the oval approximately centered.
- 4). Place the cursor at the top of the document, centered to the oval so that the Intersect line appears. Move the cursor left about 60 pixels. Drag it down and to the right while holding down the “Shift” key until the cursor touches the left edge of the document. The measurement below the cursor shows the circle is about 364 by 364 pixels.
- 5). Look for the Pathfinder panel. If you can’t see it, make if visible by selecting “Pathfinder” from the Window menu. Press “Ctrl" and "A” to select the circle and the oval, then click the “Minus Front” button in the Pathfinder panel. A circle-shaped bite is taken out of the oval.
- 6). Select the “Rectangle Tool” from the Toolbox. Move the cursor just below the center point of the oval. This places the cursor outside of the document. Drag the cursor up and to the left so it completely covers the left half of the oval.
- 7). Press “Ctrl" and "A” on the keyboard and then click the “Minus Front” button in the Pathfinder panel again. Only the left half of a crest now remains.
- 8). Press “Ctrl" and "C” to copy the half-crest, then “Ctrl" and "V” to paste the copy. Click the “Object” menu; select “Transform” and click “Reflect.” Select “Vertical” in the Axis section of the Reflect window and click “OK.” The second half of the crest is flipped.
- 9). Click the “Selection Tool” in the Toolbox and drag the second half of the crest so that its flat edge is touching the flat edge of the first half with the top and bottom points aligned.
- 10
Press “Ctrl" and "A” to select both halves. Click the “Unite” button in the Pathfinder panel. Your crest is now in one piece ready to be colored and decorated as you please.
