- 1). Do not touch the knife with your fingers. Body oils can ruin the knife. Always wear cotton or soft gloves when handling a knife.
- 2). Place the knife on a soft surface. The knife should not be laying on a hard surface but instead on velvet or another clean, smooth cloth. Another option is to have the knife in a display box being held up by plastic knife holders.
- 3). Clean the knife at least once a year. For a knife in good condition, a soft cloth is all that is needed for cleaning -- just sweep the blade with the cloth and replace it in its case.
- 4). Oil the knife. Add a drop of mineral oil to the handle and the blade -- two if it is a longer knife -- and rub in with a soft, clean cloth. Use another clean cloth to remove any excess oil from the knife. Using oil on the knife is optional, depending on its value. If you want the knife to be on display, the oil will help it keep its luster, but if it is very valuable, it is best not to alter the appearance of the knife.
- 5). Store the knife in a location that is free of moisture. The knife itself should be kept inside a box, display case or clean sheath that is free from sunlight, dust and dirt.
