Question: Was My Late Period Really an Early Miscarriage?

This past month, my period came a few days later than average and seemed a little heavier than normal. Is it possible I had a miscarriage?

Answer:

It is possible that your late or heavy period was a very early miscarriage or chemical pregnancy, but it's also possible that it wasn't. Your period can come a few days late or be a little heavier for many reasons, and the only way to know whether it was a miscarriage is if you took a pregnancy test.

Even if it was a miscarriage, however, note that this doesn't mean that anything is wrong with you. Somewhere between 15% and 30% of all conceptions end in miscarriage, and the majority of the time, this is due to non-recurrring chromosome problems in the sperm or the egg -- not an underlying health problem in the mother.
