West Virginia has become a popular ski destination: The state boasts four major ski resorts with a combined total of more than 150 slopes and trails. In addition to downhill skiing, most resorts also offer cross-country skiing, snow tubing, snowboarding, and sledding. West Virginia ski resorts are less than a five-hour drive from major cities such as Columbus, Ohio, Pittsburgh and Washington D.C. - Canaan Valley Resrt is located outside the town of Davis and sees an annual snowfall of 150 inches. Canaan offers 39 slopes, three chairlifts and two terrain mountains for various winter activities. The longest slope is a little over a mile. Night skiing is available on 11 of the slopes. Skiing lessons are available, as well as a ski school for children aged 2 to 6.

canaanresort.com - Snowshoe Mountain Resort is located in Pocahontas County and claims the title of the largest winter resort in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions. With 60 trails and 14 lifts, it comes as no surprise that Snowshoe Mountain encompasses 244 acres of skiable terrain. Three terrain parks are available. Snowshoe offers the winter Kids Night Out program for children aged 5 to 12. Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night from 6 to 9 p.m., kids can participate in indoor and outdoor activities supervised by Snowshoe ski school instructors. Included in the program price is pizza and beverage, one-hour All-Access Pass, arts and crafts activities and scavenger hunts.

The Salamander Trail is more than 2 miles long and at the peak of the season can average 5,000 skiers per hour. Timberline contains 37 slopes and three chairlifts, as well as two terrain parks. Private ski lessons are available for children under age 6. Also available is Timber Adventure, an all-day program for children aged 4 to 7. This package includes ski lessons, lunch and equipment rental. Mountain Safari is a wildlife-themed all-day package for children ages 8 to 12. Included in the package are ski lessons, lunch, lift pass and equipment rental. An on-site licensed child-care center is available for toddlers and young children.

timberlineresort.com - Winterplace Ski Resort is located in Ghent, halfway between Bluefield and Beckley. Twenty-eight slopes, 10 chairlifts, and a 16-lane snow-tubing park make up this resort. The SKIWEE program is available to children ages 4 to 12. Included is equipment rental, ski instruction, lift pass, lunch and snacks. SKIWEE offers full-day, half-day and after-school sessions. Private lessons are available for children under age 6.
