How to Grow Grass Where It Once Was Cement
- 1). Till the area to loosen the soil and mix the contents. Grass seedling roots will have difficultly penetrating a hard surface and may die or take much longer to attach and flourish. If you don't own a tiller, you can mix the soil with a shovel.
- 2). Rake the area until the soil is level. If the soil is the same height as the surrounding lawn, use a shovel to remove two inches of soil from the area.
- 3). Pour an inch of planting soil on the area, then use a shovel to mix the planting soil with the existing soil. Rake the area level. You should have a one inch gap between the area and the existing lawn.
- 4). Place grass sod across the prepared area, keeping the gaps between sod pieces as small as possible.
- 5). Water the grass for 10 minutes, making sure the grass and soil gets a good soaking. After planting, water the section twice a day for 10 minutes until the grass is attached and up to proper height. When the grass is well established, water once a day and gradually wean the grass off daily watering after summer.
- 6). Mow the new area when the grass is almost four inches tall. Do not take off more than an inch of the new grass growth.
