How to Trim Azaleas & Rhododendrons
- 1). Remove flower stems on rhododendrons after they have finished blooming. Pinch off the dead cluster, leaving the new young buds that are growing at the base.
- 2). Prune after the plant has bloomed and no later than July 31, because one year's buds are set on the previous year's growth. Cut large-leafed rhododendrons back to just above a growth point, the visible spot where new growth has started. Make cuts to azaleas and small-leafed rhododendrons at any point.
- 3). Remove stems that appear infected or are dead by cutting at least 6 to 8 inches below the damaged branch, just above a leaf node. Discard dead or infected stems.
- 4). Cut to ground level any of the inside stems that have been shaded and have become weak or are crossing other stems.
- 5). Trim back only one-third of a rhododendron if severe pruning is required. Check for new growth the following year. New growth shows that the plant is healthy. Trim one-third again one year and two years later.
