How to Accept a Divorce
- 1). Allow yourself to grieve. Divorce is one of the worst experiences many people will ever have to face, and some people compare the sadness to that of losing a loved one to death. Allowing yourself to feel sad is an important part of moving on.
- 2). Accept that you may feel a full range of emotions, especially in the early stages of divorce. In addition to feeling sad, you may also experience anger, frustration, fear, guilt, happiness, relief, regret and other emotions. This is normal, and if you don't stifle your emotions, you may deal with them sooner and move more quickly toward acceptance.
- 3). Reach out to loved ones when you're feeling sad. Talking to friends and family members can help you toward healing and acceptance.
- 4). Find out what you like about being single. Perhaps there were things you had difficulty doing while you were married; maybe your ex-spouse hated your favorite restaurant or hogged the remote. Go ahead and enjoy doing the things you couldn't do before.

- 6). Try a new hobby or activity. This can provide a diversion that may help you avoid dwelling on your divorce.
- 7). Write a letter to your ex-spouse and pour out your feelings to him, but do not mail it. Instead, seal it in an envelope and then toss it in the trash or put it away for safekeeping. Pouring your heart out on paper can help you toward closure.
- 8). Stop romanticizing your memories of your ex-spouse. Your wife may have had wonderful qualities, but if she didn't have some negatives, you probably wouldn't be divorced. Remember the reasons you've decided to divorce.
- 9). See a mental health counselor or your doctor if feeling sad, angry or anxious interferes with your regular activities or you are having suicidal thoughts. Medication or counseling may help you to get back on track.
