- Few 13-year-old boys wouldn't love a gaming system for their birthday. Or, if they already have a gaming console, they would love new video games for it. Before purchasing a game, make sure you understand video game rating systems so you don't give him an inappropriate game. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rates all video games. "E" means the game is appropriate for everyone; "E10+" is meant for kids 10 and older; "T" is for teens, meaning anyone 13 and over; "M" stands for mature audiences 17 and older; and "AO" stands for adults only.
- Many young teenagers love sports --- either watching them or playing them. For 13-year-old boys that like to play sports, give them sports equipment based on their favorite sport. Give a basketball player a basketball hoop and a ball for the driveway. A football player might like a new football or helmet. Give a bat, mitt or ball to a boy that plays baseball. If he'd rather watch sports than participate in them, give him sports memorabilia such as trading cards or signed balls. You can also give him a hat, T-shirt, jersey or sweatshirt featuring his favorite team. Or, surprise him with tickets to see his favorite team play.
- Give the teenage boy in your life the gift of technology. At 13 years old, he may be ready for his for his first cell phone. You could also get him an MP3 player, accessories and a gift card to download his favorite music. Give him his very own laptop to use for his schoolwork as well as playing games and keeping in touch with his friends. Or maybe he would rather have a tablet instead of a laptop; if he likes to read, give him an e-reader and some e-books.
- Teenagers can be very finicky when it comes to the things they like and don't like. What they consider cool and fun today, they could hate tomorrow. Instead of giving a 13-year-old something he could potentially hate, give him a gift card. A gift card not only allows the boy to pick out something he truly wants, but it also gives him a taste of freedom -- something many teenagers long for. Give him a gift card to a clothing, electronic or sporting goods store, or a gift card to an online retailer.
