How to Prevent Stains on a Mattress
- 1). Avoid using your bed for any purpose other than what is intended. Eat, drink or paint elsewhere. Even for the most graceful among us is it all too easy to knock over a glass, jar or plate of food onto the mattress.
- 2). Keep pets off your bed, particularly if they are not housebroken or litter trained. In this case, pets may have an unfortunate accident, resulting in a nasty stain and a lingering odor. Pets that are allowed outdoors can track in mud and other substances.
- 3). Prevent mold and mildew from growing on your bed, both of which are notorious for causing mattress stains and health problems. See to it that your living conditions dry and well-ventilated. Have larger mold and mildew infestations dealt with by a professional.
- 4). Invest in a good mattress pad. A mattress pad will shield your mattress against stain-causing substances. Mattress pads can be made of foam, vinyl and cotton, and are available as fitted sheets or toppers. These are necessities if you have small children, pets or enjoy eating and drinking on your bed.
