When you move away from home and finally get to college, it's an exhilarating experience. Whether you are moving into a dorm or renting an apartment, one of the biggest challenges you will be faced with is moving in.

If you are planning on moving into a dorm it is very important to understand that it is very different from moving into an apartment. Keep in mind-

The Size

Your college dorm is going to be relatively small in size. You will need to pack only those items that you will need and leave back the rest.

If you are going to reside in an apartment instead of a dorm you are likely to get a larger room, probably one that you will not have to share with someone. However, this may be far from college and require you to travel a much longer distance.

Sharing

You will have to share your dorm room with another room mate. Get to know this person well as you will be spending a lot of time with them. You can even divide the things you may need to get such as a coffee machine or a fridge so that you both can save space and money in your room.

In an apartment, you can decide who you want to move in with and you have a much larger control of this situation. You can even look into renting a fully furnished apartment that may be slightly more expensive but you can save on the costs of furniture moving services and other additional costs. However, your own apartment will always be more expensive than living in a dormitory.

Restrictions

Make sure you are well aware of all the restrictions that are in place. It is not only about the rules on drinking and smoking but many campuses will have different regulations about housing as well. You may not be allowed to use candles, incense sticks, high powered devices such as microwaves and such things in your room as the energy bills may run very high.

In an apartment you may do as you please. You can get your cat along with you and use as many high voltage devices as you want. However, keep in mind that you will be paying for this yourself and you must budget and plan if you need to survive on a designated amount.

Whether you decide to move into your dorm or an apartment, keep in mind that furniture movers will be expensive in the last week. The best thing you can do is to book someone in advance and move in a couple of days earlier than usual. This will even give you a chance to familiarize yourself with the surroundings and environment as well as explore the areas around your new home.
