Adobe Photoshop CS4 offers a robust assortment of tools for creating amazing effects from photographs and graphic images. The effects available in Photoshop are known as "filters," a term borrowed from photography, where filters are placed in front of the camera lens to create simple visual effects. Although the filters used by Photoshop are far from simple, they are designed to provide amazing results "off the shelf" with little user input. Use Photoshop's "Filter Gallery" to easily create some amazing effects.

    Shrink-Wrap Portraits

    • Make portrait subjects look as though they were shrink-wrapped. From the Artistic folder, choose "Plastic Wrap" and set the Highlight Strength to 15, the Detail to 9 and the Smoothness to 7. Click "OK" when finished.

    Make the Colors Run

    • Smear image colors by opening the Brush Strokes folder and selecting "Sprayed Strokes." Maximize the effect by increasing the Stroke Length to 20 and the Spray Radius to 18. Change the direction of the smear effect by selecting the desired direction from the Stroke Direction pull-down menu. Click "OK" when you are satisfied with the adjustments.

    Glass

    • Make a photo appear as though it was shot through a piece of textured glass. Select "Filters" and "Filter Gallery." Select "Glass" from the Distort folder. Adjust the settings to experiment with various glass textures. Click "OK" when finished.

    Etch-A-Sketch

    • Accomplish in moments what would take a patient Etch-A-Sketch artist days to create using the "Photocopy" filter from the Sketch folder. Crank the Detail up to 20 and set the Darkness to 32. Click "OK" to apply the effect.

    Neon Aliens

    • Transform subjects in a photo to alien-like neon apparitions by selecting "Glowing Edges" from the Stylize folder in the Filter Gallery. From the filter settings, enter an Edge Width of 4, Edge Brightness of 20 and Smoothness of 15. Click "OK" to apply the effect.

    Crochet

    • You may not know much about crocheting, but your pictures can look as though they were created by a crochet expert using the "Patchwork" filter from the Texture folder in the Filter Gallery. Enter 8 for the Square Size and 20 for the Relief value. Click "OK" and let Photoshop do the needlework for you.

Turn a Positive Into a Negative

    • This effect is not from the Photoshop Filter Gallery, but is rather applied by selecting "Layer," "New Adjustment Layer" then "Invert" from the main menu. Click "OK" to accept the default layer name, and watch your image turn into what looks like a negative image.
