History of Bleach

• Bleach is a manga and anime series written and illustrated by Noriaki Tite Kubo. The series, popularized in Tokyo, developed into a media franchise that spawned the popular television series that airs in the United States on Cartoon Network.
  
  Viz Media licensed the series for U.S. publication and attained foreign and home video distribution rights. In 2009, Bleach: The Movie was released on DVD.
  
  In 2006, the anime TV series of Bleach was launched on Cartoon Network as part of Adult Swim. After a brief hiatus, Bleach came back in 2008 only to go back on Hiatus in 2009 after airing the 167th episode . The series then returned in August 2010.
  
  

Plot

• Bleach follows teenager Ichigo Kurosaki and his newfound powers as Soul Reaper. Ichigo obtains his title after the original Soul Reaper, Rukia Kuchiki, transfers her powers to him in order to defeat a Hollow, an evil, deceased soul of a former human.
  
  Ichigo gains the power to protect others from evil Hollow spirits and to guide souls into the afterlife, while Rukia is left stranded in the human world, trying to gather her strength. When the Soul Society learns of Rukia's transfer of powers to Ichigo, she is sentenced to death. The series follows her plight and Ichigo's attempts to save her, despite the many obstacles in his way.
  
  Bleach is an ongoing series. The plotline has not yet been resolved.
  
  

Kaien Dono

• Kaien Dono was a former lieutenant of the 13th squad in the Bleach series. The 13th squad (Goetei 13, or Division 13) is the primary military branch of the Soul Society. Their mission is to protect the center of the Soul Society and defend the world of the living from evil spirits. Kaien dies at the hands of a Hollow, ending his role in the series.
  
  Kaien was the oldest sibling in the Shiba family, and he was known for his laid-back attitude and ethical beliefs. He was looked up to and believed in treating his fellow members equally. He accepted the position of lieutenant to take care of his family, and he was the first person to treat the former Soul Reaper, Rukia, like an ordinary person. Though Rukia had feelings for Kaien, she did not act upon them out of respect for his marriage to Miyako Shiba.
  
  When Miyako is killed by a Hollow, Kaien seeks revenge with Rukia's help. During the fight with the Hollow, the Hollow is able to merge itself with Kaien until they are both the same spirit. The possessed Kaein then attacks Rukia. As Kaien leaps forward to kill her, Rukia stabs him. Right before Kaien dies, free of the Hollow, he thanks Rukia and apologizes to her.
  
  The 13th Division never appointed another lieutenant after the death of Kaien.
