Postpartum Meningitis


Group B streptococcus is the leading cause of maternal and neonatal infection in the UK, although intrapartum antibiotics in colonised women have substantially reduced morbidity and mortality. Puerperal sepsis most commonly manifests as cystitis, pyelonephritis, endometritis and febrile bacteraemia. Postpartum meningitis secondary to group B streptococcus may also occur, but represents fewer than 1% of cases of adult meningitis. Iatrogenic meningitis complicating intrapartum spinal or epidural anaesthesia is extremely rare, but can occur despite meticulous aseptic technique.
