How to Prepare Pools for the Winter

104 2
    • 1). Chemically treat your pool to adjust the pH balance between 7.2 and 7.8. Adjust alkalinity to 80 to 120 part per million. Adjust the calcium hardness to 175 to 250 ppm. Adjust chlorine levels to 1 to 3 ppm. This will prevent corrosion to the metal parts of your pool. To do this, you will need the same basic pool chemicals you utilize to maintain your pool throughout the summer and the same testing kit. Follow the individual directions on the packaging of chemicals to achieve the correct balance.

    • 2). Remove all of the deck equipment such as ladders and railings. Also remove all toys such as volleyball nets.

    • 3). Add winterizing chemicals into the deep end of the pool. Winterizing chemicals help to protect the water quality during the winter months. They work in conjunction with the basic pool chemicals installed in step 1, not as an alternative to the basic chemicals.

    • 4). Clean all of the filters and skimmers to remove dirt, debris and unwanted bacteria. This is the same process you use routinely during the summer to keep your filters and skimmers in proper working order.

    • 5). Lower the water level in the pool below the return ductwork. After lowering the water level, blow out the ductwork with compressed air. A wet/dry vacuum works for this if you place the hose in the exhaust port and then put the hose into the return valve.

    • 6). Remove all of the drain plugs from your pumps, skimmers and other equipment equipped with drain plugs. Store the drain plugs in a place where you can easily locate them in the spring.

    • 7). Place the cover onto the pool and secure it to the pool edges. If you have an inground pool with a hard cover, place a pool cover pump onto the center of the cover to pump water off the pool cover during the winter.
