When 36 year old Olalla Oliveros chose to reverse Maria's course and give up fame and fortune in favor of becoming Sister Olalla del S de Mara, the beautiful Spanish model who had also appeared in television commercials and worked as an actress traded her flourishing career in favor of becoming a Catholic nun, she caused quite a bit of a stir.
She became a what?
A Catholic nun, you know, one of that increasingly-rare breed of women who dedicate their lives to God and celibacy in lieu of pursuing earthly pleasures. Some even say her decision may signal a rebirth of a near dormant Spanish catholicism.
(In a snarkily-titled article, €Did She Just Fancy a Change of Habit,€ Britain's Daily Mail reports Olalla made the move four years ago not last month but, as Hillary Clinton would say, €What difference does it make?€)
Ms. Oliveros entered the semi-cloistered Order of Saint Michael in May following what she described as an €earthquake€ experience during a visit to Fatima, the little village in Portugal where Our Lady of Ftima appeared to three poor shepherd children in 1917, performed miracles, made predictions, revealed three unsettling secrets, and urged the conversion of Russia.
Initially and understandably, visualizing herself in nun garb was beyond ridiculous but Olalla soon came to the realization that her mental image wasn't absurd at all but instead was a religious calling. As she said, €The Lord is never wrong. He asked if I will follow him, and I could not refuse.€ Now, Olalala aspires to be a simple, ordinary nun instead of the adored model-actress she previously was.
Cynic that I am, I always suspect chicanery in such news.
Is this all a publicity charade? Will Olalla hang in with her fellow nuns for a few months just to prove her commitment? Will she miss the riches and glamour she left behind? Will she run away like Maria Augusta Kutschera to marry some captain in the Spanish military and then organize a singing troupe of little Olallas, tour the world, and inspire a hit movie?
Only time will tell, of course, but at this juncture in her life the former Olalla Oliveros and now Sister Olalla del S de Mara has seemingly opted for something we all want, peace and serenity, and more power to her!
(It should be noted, however, that at least one authoritative source contends the Order of Michael is prepping for Armageddon although it €will be spared the devastating and destructive force of the Ball of Redemption.
