Many ferret owners call ferrets "perpetual toddlers.
" So, it is perhaps not surprising that many of the best toys for a pet ferret are very similar to the best toys for a toddler, with a few exceptions.
Great ferret toys that toddlers like Boxes: What's a toddler's favorite toy? Is it the new truck Grandma sent them? No.
It's the box that Grandma mailed the truck in.
Ferrets are similar.
They like boxes.
Seal the box up and put a hole in it big enough for the ferret to crawl through.
Ferrets are burrowing animals.
They love dark, enclosed spaces.
Put something soft in there, and they might nap in there.
Also, don't be surprised if your ferret stashes their treasures in their box.
Just remember to throw out the box after a few months and replace it.
Ferret-y musk embeds itself in the box.
Papers and strings: Toddlers also love to play with the wrapping paper and ribbons the present was wrapped in.
Your ferrets will love this too; however, you must supervise them and you must take away the ribbon and paper when you're done playing.
This isn't a long-term toy, but they do enjoy it for a spell.
Little houses: Plastic toy houses designed for babies and young toddlers to play in are great for ferrets.
Where the toddler practices opening tiny doors and sliding down mini-slides, the ferret likes going through the tiny doors, going down the slides, and hiding in the cupboards.
Digging box: Toddlers love sand boxes.
Ferrets do too.
They love to dig.
It's kind of messy to put a sand box in your house, so a better idea is a rice box.
Get a plastic storage bin (the kind you store holiday decorations in).
I like the clear plastic bins.
Then get about 50 pounds of cheap rice and put it in the bid.
Take the lid to the bin and cut a ferret sized hole in it.
Put the lid on the bin and duct tape it down.
For extra ferret-y fun, bury some treats in the rice box.
My ferrets love their digging box.
Check your box periodically though.
Some ferrets think the digging box is a litter box.
(Thankfully, none of mine have thought that yet.
) Little stuffed toys: Ferrets love little toys they can fit in their mouth and "steal.
" I have a box of these toys.
I got many of them from my kids' happy meals, and my kids have donated some toys.
I've made the ferrets a few toys too.
Each evening I collect all the toys and put them in a toy box.
The next day, several of the ferrets diligently move each and every toy, one by one, from the toy box to their stash.
Remember to check your toys periodically for damage.
Take away toys that leak beans or stuffing, since the beans and stuffing could be dangerous to your fuzzy.
An important toy that toddlers don't have Tubes: Ferrets are tunneling, burrowing animals, and as such, they love tubes.
Most people get their ferrets clear plastic duct tubes sold as ferret toys.
I've had those, and my ferrets love them.
A couple of the ferrets love them too much and bite through the tubes, damaging them.
My solution to this is to go to the hardware store.
The plumbing section has lightweight, ribbed, hard plastic tubes with slits cut in them.
These are much cheaper than the pet store version, and my ferrets have never destroyed them.
The only disadvantage to these tubes is that you can't see through the tubes.
For all your ferrets' toys, remember Remember to periodically check all your ferrets' toys for damage.
Make sure the toys are safe.
Toys that are safe one day might not be safe the next day.
