- 1). Sketch your vision for the design. This does not need to be in great detail, but will be a reference guide to know where you want to place your desired plants. Select plants that are low-maintenance and don't drop too many petals or leaves, which can blow into your pool. Use colored pencils, markers or crayons to show which plant goes where.
- 2). Plant your flowers, shrubs or other chosen plants in their desired location in the ground. Follow all spacing and depth requirements for each plant, as well as their individual sun-requirements.
- 3). Place the mulch or decorative stone around the plants. Use caution as to not damage the new plants. Mulch should be kept about 1 inch away from the plants to keep disease and too much humidity at bay.
- 4). Transplant the remaining new plants into decorative urns, fence planters or terra cotta pots using potting soil. When using urns, place the new potted plants strategically around the pool inside the fence.
- 5). Plants in terra cotta pots can be hung on the fence using pot hangers. Pot hangers can fit many different sizes of pots for wood and other fence materials, and allow a decorative touch to the fence itself. Hang planters, if chosen, at this time as well.
