    • Colds are upper respiratory tract illnesses that can be caused by any number of 200 viruses. There are one billion colds in the United States each year. Over 200,000 people are hospitalized due to influenza and approximately 36,000 people die from flu-related complications, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

    Thyme

    • A natural alternative to over-the-counter cough syrup is thyme. Most people are familiar with its use as a spice. It has a reputation as a stimulant to the thymus gland. This gland helps to control the immune system. However, it has long been used on the European continent as a natural cure for coughs. Its properties dissolve mucus, stifle coughs and provide relief for fevers, headaches and sore throats that are normally associated with cold and flu (The How to Herb Book, 2007).

    Vitamin C

    • Vitamin C can play a key role in supporting the immune system and developing healthy tissues. It has a strong reputation for being a formidable force against cold. There are numerous foods from which to obtain vitamin C such as grapefruits, oranges and peaches. Red peppers, seedless grapes and cantaloupe are also excellent natural sources of vitamin C. The USDA's Dietary Guidelines regarding vitamin C recommend 90 mg for men and 75 mg for women on a daily basis.

    Echinacea

    • Another herb that has received numerous press clippings is echinacea. Alternative Medicine Review, Volume 12, 2007, reports that echinacea, which is arguably the most recognized herbal supplement for prevention and treatment of colds and flu, is used for a variety of conditions from alopecia to cancer, with its modern application for immune support. A chemical property called properdin interacts with the immune system to increase the fortification level and guard against bacteria and virus strikes.

    Garlic

    • Garlic has long been included on the list of natural cures for colds and flu. It has antibacterial elements that support the immune system and provide resistance against bacteria and viruses. Allicin is an active ingredient in garlic that is one of nature's most powerful antibiotics. Many people add garlic to their meals to fight short-term symptoms and to build up their long-term defense. Onion has very similar antiviral elements to those contained in garlic. Onions as well as leeks can be used as an ingredient in many recipes.
