Michigan Requirements for Reinstating a Drivers License
- Fulfill all the requirements of the suspension. Sometimes this means just waiting until the suspension or restriction time period ends.
- Find the Michigan Secretary of State branch office nearest to your place of residence through the department's office locator (see Resources for a link). Offices are generally open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, except for offices located in city buildings (where normal 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. hours apply). The offices close on major holidays.
- Supply the Secretary of State office with proper identification, which includes proof of your Social Security number, your birth certificate, your passport or other photo identification and two documents proving your Michigan residency, which can include mail you have received at your home.
- Depending on the reason your license was suspended, you may owe a reinstatement fee of varying amounts. For instance, as of April 2011, the standard reinstatement fee and the fee for drug-related, watercraft and snowmobile reinstatement is $125; for lack of insurance proof suspensions, the standard fee is $25, but $50 if there is a hold on the license plate. A $45 reinstatement fee must be paid to the court in all cases except insurance, which has a $25 assessment fee.
