Should You Insure Your Old Cars?
I happen to have 1970 model Chevy van. I still use it, because it looks hippie. My dad passed it on to me when I turned 21. I repainted it, installed some sound systems, and reconfigured its engine. Up to now, despite its age, it still gives me the chill. That 70's hip and groove that my father had when he was young.
My Chevy will turn 25 this year. With its age, I seldom use it. I prefer to use my car for it is more convenient to drive. I am wondering if I still need to insure it now that I seldom use it. My curiosity paid its way when I received answers to my inquiry.
I found out that there is still a need to purchase auto insurance even for old cars. It is just the same as other cars. Legally speaking, I am still compelled to get an insurance quote for it. Failure to do so means you I cannot drive my Chevy, making it fully unutilized. It saddened me to imagine that it is as if I am already dumping over my Chevy. So despite the cost, I still insured my Chevy.
It surprised me when I found out that I made a great decision. I insured my Chevy with the full or comprehensive auto insurance. I got a discount since my driving record is a clean slate. As hippie as my Chevy was, I realized the coolness of my decision when I got into trouble. I accidentally hit an island on the street. It wrecked my bumper. Also, it left a scratch on the side of my Chevy. Amazingly, the insurance company covered all repairs. I did not spend any cent on its repairs and part replacements. I also did not pay for the damages to the street island. The insurance company settled that also.
The insurance quote re-bonded my relationship with my father's Chevy. I often use it, to make use of its insurance cost. I also found out, that aside from collision accidents, my Chevy is covered from thefts, vandalism and other incidents even while on the parking. I do not regret the cost of my Chevy's auto insurance. It is helping me protect what my father left me: his memories, my childhood, and shared moments that my family shared in this van.
