- If someone in your home is a craftsman or serious hobbyist, a workshop might be a welcome addition to the backyard. A simple storage building can be insulated and wired for electricity so that it is usable all year, and you can add interior elements such as work counters, storage cabinets and shelving to adapt the space to your needs. You could set up such a building to meet the needs of a potter, painter, guitar-maker, jeweler, gardener, blacksmith or weaver. It could also be a detached home office for any type of home business.
- You could transform the same type of storage building into a child's playhouse where all the plastic homemaking toys can be put to use. Kitchen sets with plastic food and dishes, baby dolls with beds, workbenches, tool boxes and dress-up costumes all have homes in this pretend play land. Another option is to build a completely unique fort or tree house using "found" materials such as old doors, corrugated metal, wooden pallets and scrap lumber.
- Outdoor kitchens and bars make attractive places to entertain, in climates that are suitable for them. An outdoor kitchen usually features a paved area with a large, built-in barbecue, a mini refrigerator, a one- or two-burner stove and sometimes a small sink. You would want to have a nice dining area with table and chairs, of course. An outdoor bar is similar except that it focuses on the storage of drinks and doesn't require the cooking components. You may want to build an awning or roof over the counter areas for protection against the weather. You might seriously consider an outdoor stage or dance floor if you live in a household that enjoys entertaining with live music or dance parties.
- Certain decorative building projects are lower cost and always add an enchanting decorative touch to a garden. Pergolas, trellises and rustic benches look lovely in nearly any yard, if you choose a style that coordinates with the existing décor.
