Video: How to Prepare Soil for Container Gardens
Video Transcript
Hi, I'm Angela Price from Eden Condensed Small Space Garden Design and this is garden space. Today, I'm going to show you how to prepare soil for a raised bed container. So I have actually a small raised bed container here that's made out of redwood. It's 2 x 2 or about 18 inches by 18 inches and you can use several of these. You can also have larger beds as well. You can be creative and make a garden bed out of a feeding trough or stones but I do like to use redwood or cedar because it's rot resistant and insect resistant. So the first thing you'll want to do is to get yourself some nice organic potting soil and I filled the box here with the potting soil. You can also add some compost to it if you've had compost that you've made. I like to add a little bit of kelp meal to it and you can just sprinkle that on the surface, about half a cup to a cup's worth depending on the size of the box, get that mixed in. With a box this size, I actually like to get in there with my hands and mix it up. If you have a larger box then I would use a rake to mix it. I'm also going to add some organic fertilizer that is specified and formulated for fruits and vegetables and herbs because that's what I'm going to plan on planting in here and then finally before I plant I want to give it a nice good watering to make sure that at least the top three to four inches of soil are nice and damp and to give my seedlings that I'm going to put in here a good start. So that's really all you need to do to prepare your soil for planting in a container but if you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me at www.edencondensed.com. Thank you very much.
