Have you ever had to cancel a trip? It can be extremely difficult to get your money back, in fact, it is often impossible. Most airline tickets are non-refundable, but typically there is some room for maneuver if purchased directly from the airline. Still, it's risky. This is further complicated when you make your purchase through a travel website like Expedia. And what about travel mishaps that occur while you are away on your trip? What if you lose your luggage, or have an emergency that results in you cutting your trip short? Travel insurance can be the answer, but it's really worth the money?

Any time you rent a car, you are asked whether to add the coverage. This is a form of travel insurance. In many cases, their own automobile insurance will cover you while driving a rental car, but you should check to ensure that this is the case before the lower the insurance offered by rental agency. If you get into an accident in a rental car, you could end up being responsible for the cost of the car if a total loss, or if the accident was your fault.

And you 've probably heard horror stories of people mislaying their baggage or worse, having it stolen. This is especially inconvenient on a trip outside the country where you may not speak the language. Trying to get your bags back can be a nightmare, not to mention you have to buy new clothes to help you get by until you get your own baggage back.

In both cases, and in many cases, travel insurance can be useful. By buying insurance you can be exempted from having to pay for a wrecked car, and can cover the cost of clothing and toiletries, if your bags are stolen. If there is an emergency at home while travelling, travel insurance can even buy tickets to get back as quickly as possible.

The downside is, like any other insurance, is something you must pay in advance if you end up needing it or not, and no refunds.

If you think you need travel insurance, and keep your mind at ease while you travel, take time to find the information provided by the travel booking site to use. Better yet, talk to current owners or car insurance company to see if they are given. Even you can give a discount if you have other policies with them. But comparing the cost of insurance against what they are taking with you. A bit of baggage with two days worth of clothes may not be worth the premium. But if you're spending two weeks in Europe, travel insurance can be a very good idea.
