How to Use Nuclear Energy to Help the Ozone Layer

    • 1). Replace major carbon-emitting power plants with nuclear power plants. Carbon emissions contribute to global warming, which in turn tends to encourage more use of air conditioning. While newer air conditioners in highly developed countries do not use CFC's, less developed countries still use them because of their ease of manufacture. Reducing the overall temperature of the planet through the use of nuclear energy may cause CFC-cooled air conditioners to be manufactured in fewer numbers.

    • 2). Build transmission lines for all nuclear power plants to encourage the trading of energy. Because nuclear power plants can throttle up and down their energy output quickly, they can sell off their extra capacity to other markets. The heaviest times for energy usages are during the day, which enables regions where it is night to ship excess energy to daytime markets to augment their supply; e.g., Europe shipping to Asia.

    • 3). Develop and build nuclear-powered cargo ships. While nuclear power has largely been reserved for submarines and aircraft carriers, it is entirely usable in the massive cargo container ships that travel between China and its export markets. These ships can use tons of carbon-based fuel in a single day, which can have an impact on climate change similar to that of gas- or coal-burning power plants. By using nuclear energy, they emit no carbon byproducts. This is especially useful in natural gas tankers that have to refrigerate their natural gas in order to store it as a liquid.

    • 4). Replace oil-based fuels with inexpensive nuclear energy to power cars. Nuclear power can be used either to recharge battery-operated vehicles or to operate hydrogen-producing plants to power hydrogen-fueled cars. The less carbon emitted, whether by car, boat or power plant, the fewer CFC-cooled air conditioners are needed, and that's an effective way to use nuclear energy to help the ozone layer.
