- 1). Fertilize at the time of planting. Mix in two ounces of palm fertilizer per one inch of trunk. Be sure the soil is moist and water the entire area immediately after planting.
- 2). Add one additional ounce of slow-release fertilizer for every three inches of trunk above ground. This should be done after planting and thoroughly watering your new palm.
- 3). Add a manganese supplement. A deficiency in manganese is the most common cause of poor palm growth. Buy a supplement at your local nursery and follow the application directions.
- 4). Bury palm pellets around the base of the tree. Three or four times per year, add slow-release fertilizer in the form of pellets to the soil. Spread the pellets evenly under the canopy of the tree and be sure to follow the exact directions on the label.
- 5). Use an organic fertilizer once a month. Try Milorganite, fish emulsion, blood meal or seaweed to naturally feed your palm plants. These organic fertilizers will not burn or harm your plants with frequent application.
