Wild Hermit Crabs
· Wild hermit crabs live near the ocean in tropical areas.
The temperature there is quite high, sand is everywhere and waves keep hitting the seaside.
So, you need to make the crab aquarium look like some tropical island, just like wild crabs have it.
Also, that's the reason why constantly measuring temperature is so important.
· They lay their eggs in the sand near water; tides carry the eggs to the ocean, where hermit crabs hatch.
Because of this, hermit crabs cant reproduce in captivity.
The only way to make them do that is by simulating the shores of the sea.
· This type of crabs usually live in colonies of one hundred and more.
This explains why it is recommended to get at least a few crabs.
Crabs don't like living alone.
· In nature, hermit crabs always have access to sea water, that's why it's important to have sea water dishes in hermit crab aquarium too.
· Hermies have a strange habit of walking over or digging under things they could get around.
This is why you might see your crabs climbing over each other.
· Did you notice that sometimes it is difficult to get a crab out of his shell when you take him in your hands? Hermit crabs see this as a dangerous situation, because in nature they risk being attacked by seagulls and other predators, so they tend to hide in their shells and become more active at night.
Try avoiding putting your crab in a shadow when holding him in your hand; this might make him think that there is some predator above him.
· In nature, finding fine, intact and suitable shells is tough.
And it gets even worse because many crabs might like the selected shell.
This is when sometimes even fatal battle for shells starts.
You should avoid this by putting many suitable shells in your hermit crab aquarium.
