Puppy Crate Training - What You Should Know Before You Begin
Crate training a dog does require some time and patience on your part but in the end it will be worth the effort.
A crate is a vital tool for raising a happy well behaved dog.
Puppies should not have full access to your home until they know the house rules.
Dog Crates can be used in many situations...
1.
While potty training your dog.
2.
For transporting when you travel with your pet.
3.
To keep your household items safe from a chewing puppy.
4.
If you are too busy to supervise your furry friend, place him in a crate until he has been trained and knows what is expected of him.
5.
A place to escape from children.
6.
A safe place while you are in the kitchen cooking.
7.
When the family is away from home.
Before You Start Puppy Crate Training...
There are some things your can do to prepare the crate for your puppy.
Your pet should view the crate as a safe home but it may take some time to become familiar with the kennel.
Here are some suggestions...
- Location is important so put it in an area of your home where you spend time.
- Place a crate bed or cozy blanket on the bottom for comfort.
- Your puppy should be allowed to check the crate out on his own.
- Praise your buddy when he goes through the door.
- Place a toy inside the kennel to lure your dog inside or a favorite treat.
- To make your buddy relaxed, try playing with him when he is sniffing around the crate.
Steps 3-6 should be repeated several times a day until your puppy is comfortable with him new hideaway. - This is a gradual process but when your dog seems comfortable being inside, shut the door quickly and then open it.
Place a chew toy inside and shut the door for a minute or two and then open.
You now need to slowly add more time until it is safe to leave your pet for fifteen minutes.
when he is okay with this, leave the room, come back and then casually wander in and out.
When you think your friend is ready, you can start leaving him in the kennel when you are out of the house.
Begin with fifteen minutes or so and then slowly add more time.
Use you own judgment. - Do not leave your pet in the kennel for extended periods of time, not more than 2 to 3 hours.
- Your dog should have room to comfortably turn around and stand in the crate.
It will be a little hideaway to get away from the hustle and bustle.
This will make crate training a puppy or dog much less stressful.
Once your canine friend is comfortable with the kennel, it is now time to start the training.
