    • 1). Print a copy of the workbook titled "Publication 915" from the Internal Revenue Service website (see Resources).

    • 2). Fill out "Worksheet A" to find out if any of your benefits are taxable. Enter your total SSD income on Line A, subtract half of that amount and enter that figure on Line B, enter any additional income on Line C and enter any tax-exempt interest income on Line D. Add lines B, C and D together to calculate your base amount. If your base amount is under $25,000 and you're a single filer, head of household, widower, or married and filing separately due to living apart, you don't owe any taxes. You also don't owe any taxes if your base amount is under $32,000 and you're married and filing jointly, or if your base amount is $0 and you're married and filing separately while living together.

    • 3). Fill out "Worksheet 1" if your calculated base amount determined that you owe taxes. This worksheet can be found on Page 16 of "Publication 915," and consists of 19 different lines asking about your income and calculating adjustments.

    • 4). Print "Form 1040" from the IRS website (see Resources).

    • 5). Fill out "Form 1040" in its entirety. The first section will ask for your contact information and Social Security number. The next section will ask for your filing status. In the exemptions section, indicate whether you're claiming just yourself, or also a spouse or other dependents. Lines 7 through 19 of the income section need to be filled out if you have any type of income besides your SSD benefits. On Line 20a, you'll want to enter the figure you calculated for line 1 on "Worksheet 1," and on line 20b, you'll want to enter the figure you calculated for Line 19. On Line 22, add up your total income for that section. In the section's adjusted gross income, tax and credits, other taxes, and payments, fill out any lines applicable to you're situation. When you get to Line 73 of the refund section, subtract Line 60 from Line 72 to determine the amount of your refund.
