Sewing Tips on Making Valances

    Fabric

    • Lining fabric prevents light from coming through the valance. When selecting fabric for the valance, choose a lining fabric that works for your room. If the curtains the valance will be attached to has a lining the valance should as well. Without the lining fabric the valance will be translucent and not look finished. Choose a fabric for the valance that matches the curtains as well as the decor of the room.

    Measurements

    • Measuring the window is the most important part of making valances. Measure incorrectly and the valances could be too short or too narrow. Start with the width of the windows. Add a few inches to the width to fully cover the window. Measure for the height of the valances as well. Follow the pattern for the height. Do not forget to account for the seam allowance in the measurements. Cut the lining fabric to this measurement as well.

    Patterns

    • Do not attempt to cut fabric for a valance without a pattern. Many patterns will include additional information on how to get pleated or ruffled valances. Patterns can be especially useful if you are making multiple valances. Using the same pattern on all of the valances instead of freehand cutting and sewing. The finished project will be more aesthetically pleasing with a pattern.

    Tools

    • For large valance projects having a sewing machine will save you time. Additionally, sewing chalk can mark where fabric needs to be cut or folded. Use measuring tape to ensure that any marks or pins are straight. An iron and ironing board will take care of any creases in the fabric before cutting or sewing the valances. Iron seams as well to create a clean seam.
