How to Replace a Piezo Volume Pot

    • 1). Plug in your soldering iron so it will begin heating up. Make sure it is placed in a secure location so it will not drop to the ground and cause a fire or injury.

    • 2). Remove the knobs and the tip of your pick-up selector. The knobs are usually removed by loosening the very small Allan wrench nut on the side of the knob and then pulling them upward. Other knobs like the plastic, numbered Fender knobs or the large Gibson "speed" knobs are removed by simply pulling upward. Consult your guitar's manual if you are not sure how to remove the knobs properly.

    • 3). Remove the pick guard from your guitar to gain access to the pots. Some guitars have a plastic panel on the back side of the body that you remove instead of a pick-up guard. This is held together by small Phillips-head mounting screws.

    • 4). Locate the volume pot that needs to be replaced. It is between the hot input from the pickup or selector switch and the hot output to your guitar's output jack. There may be a small resistor attached to the Piezo volume pot as well.

    • 5). Heat up all of the soldering joints that connect the Piezo volume pot to the other components of your guitar. Once the joints become liquid, remove the old solder with your soldering vacuum.

    • 6). Solder in the new Piezo volume pot by first heating up the contacts and the wire and then applying solder to the joint. Allow the solder to melt, pull away your soldering iron and let the joint harden. Looking down at the Piezo volume pot, make sure you solder the input to the first pin on the left, and the output to the second pin on the right.

    • 7). Test out the volume pot before reattaching the pick guard or back guard and make sure it functions properly.
