Cosmetic Hair Restoration and Hair Loss Treatment

101 1
The surgery aims to work with androgenic alopecia or pattern baldness where typically the center and front of the scalp is exposed to baldness whereas, the back of the scalp and above the ears is likely to resume with a more stable hair density.

There are two methods by which the hair from the back of the scalp, or donor area, can be extracted.
  • Follicular Unit Transplant or FUT— removes a strip of skin from the back of the scalp and dissect that skin to yield the hair follicles stuck in it. The wound is closed and sutured which leaves a fine linear scar that would be permanent, or may be hidden beneath top layers of hair.

  • Follicular Unit Extraction or FUE— extracts hair follicles directly from the scalp by plucking them one at a time with specially designed fine needles and punches and magnified vision. There is minimal scarring of red specs or dots that fade off within days leaving rather a decreased density in the donor zone, and the scars are virtually undetectable.

Follicular Grafting is the main approach of modern hair restoration. Wherein the old techniques gave the patients the mini-grafts which looked like bristles in a toothbrush, the newer advancements make the results relatively undetectable within a short span after the surgery. 2 to 5 hairs are extracted to create a single hair graft, which is planted to the bald zone.

Hair follicular units are referred to the naturally occurring 2 to 5 bundles or groups that are accordingly extracted with microscopic vision and thus yield most naturalistic results.

Hair transplant surgery is largely sought after by men, because hair loss leading to baldness is usually a man's problem than a woman's. Women are evenly affected by permanent hair loss as men, but women usually see a decreased density than baldness.

There are other hair loss syndromes than male pattern baldness, usually lesser common ones, including—
  • Traction Alopecia: is a type of external scarring alopecia, wherein permanent hair loss and baldness is occurred due to rigorous hair styling, ironing, straightening and pulling. This type of hair loss is common amongst African men and women alike, mainly because of their cultural trend of extravagant hair styles and cornrow.
  • Telogen effluvium: is a type of non-scarring alopecia wherein permanent hair loss is caused by destruction of stem cell progenitor cells due to mainly malnutrition or may be a side effect of a disease or disorder.
  • Cancer and cancer treatment, Chemotherapy leads to permanent baldness in men and women alike.

Hair restoration is majorly sought after for cosmetic reasons. Hair loss has no health hazards and hair transplant has no health benefits. It is all about looking good and feeling good. With a number of celebrity hair transplantation, the surgery has found a niche ground and is highly sought after at all parts of the world.
