Information on Advance Directives
- Types of advance directives include living wills, do not resuscitate orders (DNRs) and durable power of attorney (DPA). Each of these types of advance directives are made while the person making them is still in a rational state of mind and able to speak or communicate.
- Do not resuscitate advance directives instruct medical care providers and family that no cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or other life-sustaining efforts are to be made if the DNR order giver stops breathing or experiences heart failure. Doctors and hospitals in all states accept DNR advance directives.
- A living will is a written statement that expresses what types of medical treatments should and should not be made if the patient is unable to make those wishes known because of serious or terminal illness or injury.
- A DPA advance directive identifies one person whom the directive giver has given authority to make medical decisions on their behalf. A DPA is in effect when the directive giver is unconscious or unable to make decisions.
