Dealing With Anxiety - Prescription Drugs, Psychotherapy or Water?

103 9
It's very hard to describe to someone who has never suffered with chronic anxiety what it actually feels like? Giving a description is easier but doesn't get across what is being felt.
I could give as examples not being able to lie back in the bath but having to sit bolt upright or driving a car with my hands clenched to the driving wheel not knowing whether I'll be able to make it to my destination without pulling over to the side of the road for a while in the hope I'll eventually fee better.
Living with this condition is not an option, so what to do? There are 3 principle options.
Go to the doctor and receive a prescription for anti anxiety medication like diazepam.
This will certainly help but once the effect has worn off, the anxiety may start up again.
These medications can help one to get over a short term problem with anxiety but may be of no help for the chronic kind.
One could end up relying on medication for years, possibly ending up with an addiction to the drug.
Drugs do not solve the underlying problem of what is causing the anxiety.
The second option is to go for counselling or psychotherapy.
If the anxiety is the result of a particular known problem then counselling may be the best option.
If the problem goes deeper, then psychotherapy may be of value in rooting out the underlying causes of the anxiousness.
The relationship and trust that's built up between psychotherapist and client can not only overcome the problem but can be a life changing experience.
The downside is that it could take many months to unpeel the emotional and psychological layers that allow for the problem to be resolved and to move on with one's life.
But there's a third and very unusual option.
And that is to drink water.
This can work if the body is dehydrated.
The body can be dehydrated even without a thirst sensation.
The body can be fooled into thinking its getting enough to drink when we take down tea, coffee, alcohol, soft drinks etc.
In fact these types of drinks have a diuretic effect and make us lose water.
Dehydration has a negative effect on various glands and hormones in the body that give rise to physiological stress.
Once the dehydration is resolved, anxiety just falls away.
Depending on the degree of dehydration it could take up to month to resolve, drinking eight glasses containing eight ounces of water a day.
