5 Most Memorable Lines from Kung Fu Panda

106 1
In the years since its 2008 release, Kung Fu Panda has become one of those films that its fans love to quote on a day-to-day basis – as the movie boasts a number of memorable lines and chunks of dialogue. The following five utterances stand as the best of the best within the DreamWorks Animation comedy:

1. “Skadoosh!”

Every heroic movie character needs a catchy one-liner and Kung Fu Panda’s Po is no exception. Though “skadoosh” has become associated with the film, Po (Jack Black) actually utters the nonsensical word just once. During his epic battle with the fearsome Tai Lung (Ian McShane), Po finally gets the evil snow leopard right where he wants him and prepares to unleash a mystical move known only as the Wuxi Finger Hold. Tai Lung’s initial disbelief – “You’re bluffing! Shifu didn’t teach you that!” – quickly gives way to acceptance as Po utters the above line and executes the deadly move, which results in an enormous mushroom cloud that covers the Valley of Peace and apparently vaporizes Tai Lung.More »

2. “Today is a gift. That is why it is called the "present.”

There are plenty of undeniably hilarious quotes in Kung Fu Panda, but the film also includes several lines apparently inspired by Eastern philosophies – with the above quote standing out as the most memorable. Oogway (Randall Duk Kim) is the shrewd old tortoise that initially convinces Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) to train Jack Black’s Po, and the character becomes known for his penchant for uttering wise-sounding proverbs. The best example of this comes about halfway through the film, as Oogway attempts to cheer a despondent Po up by remarking, “You are too concerned with what was and what will be. There is a saying: Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.”More »

3. “I love kung fu!”

Early on in Kung Fu Panda, Po (Jack Black) makes his way over to the Valleyof Peace’s Palace Arena – where Oogway is preparing to identify the legendary Dragon Warrior. But after he arrives late and the doors close on him, Po attempts to gain entrance to the sealed Arena by rigging a chair with a load of fireworks. Po lights the fuse and engages in a brief conversation with his father, and as the fuse is almost finished, he shuts his eyes and shouts “I love kung fu!” – expecting that he’ll finish saying the line in midair. It’s a simple bit of dialogue that’s made hilarious by Jack Black’s enthusiastic delivery, and it’s impossible not to laugh at the way Po just quietly trails off as he realizes that his homemade contraption is a failure.More »

4. “His enemies would go blind from overexposure to pure awesomeness!”

In Kung Fu Panda’s opening minutes, we watch as Po (Jack Black) effortlessly takes on dozens of opponents and casually hangs out with the members of the Furious Five. We quickly discover that this is all part of a dream that Po is having, which certainly explains the comically complimentary nature of the voice-over narration that accompanies this stretch. In addition to the above line – which is, in its entirety, “He was so deadly, in fact, that his enemies would go blind from overexposure to pure awesomeness!” – Po notes that “never before had a panda been so feared and so loved!” and that villains “were no match for his bodacity.” (And, of course, who can forget the bystanders who refer to Po as “attractive” and “too awesome”?)More »

5. “I’m not a big, fat panda. I’m THE big, fat panda!”

This line is actually part of the same scene responsible for the #1 pick on this list, but it’s simply too good not to include. Po (Jack Black) and Tai Lung (Ian McShane) have spent the last several minutes battering one another in a fight that leaves large swaths of destruction in their trail, and even though it seems fairly clear that Po has won the battle, Tai Lung remains defiant and, through breaths of exhaustion, utters, “You can’t defeat me! You’re just a big, fat panda!” Po retaliates by grabbing Tai Lung’s attacking hand and triumphantly exclaiming, “I’m not a big, fat panda. I’m THE big, fat panda!”More »
