Getting a Safe Tan: Sunless Tanning

    • 1). Purchase a sunless tanner that contains dihydroxyacetone (DHA). This is the only FDA approved ingredient for sunless tanning.

    • 2). Take a shower. Using an exfoliating scrub or soap, use a cotton washcloth and gently rub every part of your body that you want to tan to remove dead skin cells. This will help the tanner go on smoothly and last longer.

    • 3). Put on your tanning outfit. If you aren't planning on doing an all over tan, you can wear your bathing suit or other close fitting outfit, Otherwise, just go naked.

    • 4). Apply the tanner. Starting with your legs, apply the tanner quickly but thoroughly, making sure not to apply too much (takes too long to rub it in) or too little (multiple applications to one area can leave streaks). Evenly apply the lotion, being careful to not miss any areas. Apply sparingly on knees, ankles, wrists and elbows. Do not apply to the sides of your feet or toes.

    • 5). Wash your hands. You may want to stop to wash your hands every five minutes or so to make sure they are not stained by the tanner as it develops. Wash your hands thoroughly in warm water with soap, using your nail brush to scrub under your nails and between your fingers. Don't forget the sides of your hands and your wrists.

    • 6). Dry. You should avoid contact with anything for about 15 minutes. Do not put your clothing back on for at least an hour. Also avoid anything that will make you sweat.
