- 1). Open a Web browser and navigate to the Microsoft Download Center. Download the free "Word Viewer" utility by clicking on the download link and saving the file to your desktop.
- 2). Click on the downloaded file to install the free utility on your computer. Once the program is installed, locate the DOCX file that you want to view and double-click on it. The file opens in the viewer utility.
- 3). Convert a DOCX file to DOC format that you can view in earlier versions of Microsoft Word by using a free online conversion site, if you don't want to download the free utility described in the previous step. Browse to a website such as Zamzar.com or InvestInTech.com; both will convert your DOCX files to the DOC format free of charge.
- 4). View DOCX files on a Mac using a free online converter such as the ones described above. Alternately, you can view these pesky files in your Safari browser, although it requires a few steps. First, save the DOCX file as a ZIP archive. Then, unzip the file. Click "File" on your Safari toolbar and select "Open File." Navigate to the file that you extracted from the ZIP file, which is now saved as an XML file. Safari can open and display the XML file, allowing you to view the contents of the Microsoft Word document.
