How to Connect an Outdoor Water Faucet
- 1). Shut off the water supply for the pipe where you want to connect the outdoor faucet. There may be a separate cutoff valve near the outside faucet, but if not cut the water for the entire house at the main shutoff valve, usually located near the water meter. Check in the front or side yard for a concrete or PVC utility box. The water meter and shutoff valve should be inside. Rotate the shutoff valve, using a wrench or pair of pliers, if necessary, to cut the water supply.
- 2). Open the faucet and allow water to clear the line, then remove the old faucet by twisting it counterclockwise with a wrench or adjustable pliers.
- 3). Clean off the threads on the pipe where you will mount the water supply valve. Rub a piece of steel wool on the threads to clean off any previous remnants of caulk or tape.
- 4). Apply pipe thread compound to the exterior pipe. Use your finger to ensure that the compound is distributed evenly around the threads.
- 5). Attach the outdoor faucet. Thread the faucet onto the end of the water-supply pipe and turn clockwise. Tighten with a plumber's wrench or large pair of pliers. Ensure that the faucet is aligned so that the faucet handle is on the top of the faucet spout when you are finished tightening.
- 6). Allow the thread compound time to cure according to manufacturer's instructions.
- 7). Restore the water supply. Open the faucet by turning the handle counterclockwise. Check that the faucet works properly and does not leak. Tighten if necessary.
- 8). Slip the faucet handle over the end of the stem. Secure with the screw. Restore the water supply.
