How to Safely Turn Off Christmas Lights
- 1). Turn off all your Christmas lights by pressing the power button. If your lights do not include power buttons, simply unplug them from the power outlet.
- 2). Remove the lights carefully, making sure that you do not damage bulbs or blow fuses. Roll up or wind the lights gently around a piece of cardboard. Do not twist the lights because that causes tangles that damage light strands. Tangled lights can also be very annoying and frustrating to untangle.
- 3). Unplug and remove lights from Christmas trees. Starting from the top, carefully remove the lights, making sure that you do not drop them. Be very careful with string lights because they are very fragile. Use a ladder, a stool or a similar device if you are unable to reach the top of the tree. Wrap or wind the lights properly around a piece of cardboard to prevent damage.
- 4). Place the wrapped lights in their original boxes.
- 5). Store your Christmas lights in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Direct sunlight damages bulbs by weakening the plastic on the light strands. You can also store your lights in dark plastic bags.
